" Taiwan recorded the first outbreak of the highly pathogenic H5N2 avian influenza, with 57,500 chickens culledin the Tainan and Changhua areas, the Council of Agriculture(COA) said Saturday.
The egg-laying chicken farm in Changhua reported the disease on Dec. 27, 2011, while cases at the one in Tainan were detected on Feb. 7 this year, according to COA officials.
The outbreak was under control and no chicken at nearby farms were found sick, said Wu Ming-pin, deputy director of Tainan's Animal Health Inspection and Protection Office.
The H5N2 virus does not affect humans and none of the three farmers and six inspectors showed symptoms of infection, said the Centers for Disease Control (CDC)."
