India, Kerala : Fever hits hilly areas

Via The Hindu :

" PATHANAMTHITTA: Twenty-eight dengue cases have been reported in the district in the past 35 days. Of the 580 viral-fever cases reported from various government health-care centres on Saturday, 11 are suspected to be of the debilitating mosquito-borne infection, sources say.

These are alarming figures for a district where, as the District Medical Office sources say, almost 70 per cent of the population contracted chikungunya, also spread by mosquitoes, in 2007.

Despite the preventive measures, viral fever has been spreading in many parts of the district over the past month. Most of the patients are from the hilly areas of Konni and Ranni, where there are many rubber plantations, sources say.

With the monsoon, the Health Department has launched a strict vigil against vector-borne diseases.

District Medical Officer Laila Divakar says people should be vigilant against such diseases. The Health Department has taken every-possible preventive step."
