" PUNE: The number of critically-ill patients due to the H1N1 flu in the district has increased considerably this month. As many as 54 patients have been put on artificial respiration at various hospitals in the district in the second week of July.
Besides, the number of people admitted to various hospitals has gone up to 550 between July 5 and 11, as against 123 in the first week of June. The number of deaths due to swine flu this month has already reached 11 till date, as against a total of 13 casualties reported last month.
“There is definitely a spurt in H1N1 cases. The average number of critically-ill patients was not more than 10 per week between May and June. However, there has been a sudden rise in critical cases requiring artificial respiration. Last month, the mortality rate due to the H1N1 influenza vis-à-vis the number of severely positive cases had gone down. This month, there has been a definite surge in swine flu casualties as well,” said an official of the state health services."
