Indonesia : Luwu Timur, South Sulawesi : Thousands of birds die of bird flu

" Mangkutana : Thousands of chickens suddenly died of bird flu H5N1 in two villages, Desa Wonorejo and Desa Pancakarsa of Kecamatan (sub-district) Mangkutana, Kabupaten (municipal) Luwu Timur, 27-28 July 2010.

Cause of chicken death was confirmed through rapid tests by Livestock and Health Service of Kabupaten Luwu Timur.

To anticipate further spreading to animal and human, Livestock Service immediately culled all survived birds followed by disinfection around Wonorejo and Pancakarsa.
People were asked to report any sudden death in birds to bird flu centers that have been built in each sub-district.

This incident is the second bird flu attack in Luwu Timur. Livestock Service of South Sulawesi province responded by supplying masks, protective cloths, disinfectant and veterinarian to the locations.

To prevent spreading to other sub-districts, officials restricted livestock and livestock product traffic from and to Luwu Timur."
