People trapped after 'huge' NZ quake
People are trapped in buildings in the New Zealand city of Christchurch after a strong earthquake caused extensive damage and cut power, witnesses told local television.
“It is huge. We just don’t know if there are people under this rubble,” a priest standing outside the rubble of a damaged cathedral told New Zealand television.
6.3 magnitude quake hits N.Zealand's Christchurch
WELLINGTON — A large 6.3 magnitude earthquake rocked New Zealand's Christchurch Tuesday, causing widespread damage in a city already recovering from a major quake in September last year.
Television footage showed panicked workers fleeing from offices after the quake, which the US Geological Survey said hit at 12:51pm (2351 GMT Monday) five kilometres (three miles) from the city at a depth of just four kilometres.
