Council says three-quarters of homes in Christchurch now have power and 40% have water. Also, fuel is now in constant supply and there is no need for panic buying.
Five aftershocks measuring over 3 on the Richter scale have been felt in the last two hours.
Twelve streets behind Redcliffs Primary School have been evacuated with residents cleared out after cliffs in the area were deemed to be unstable. The Redcliffs suburb is on the way to Sumner. The army helped police with the evacuation, which started about 10pm. Police said residents left willingly and have gone to welfare centres at Cowes Stadium and Pioneer Stadium.
The City Council has released detailed information on current road and bridge closures.
