" Health officials are investigating a case of tuberculosis in the Bay of Plenty after a student was hospitalised with the disease.
It is unknown how the student, who attends Te Puke High School, contracted the illness, which very few people are treated for each year.
Toi Te Ora Medical Officer of Health, Neil de Wet, said tuberculosis, or TB, was not easily passed from person to person.
"Most of the time people with tuberculosis have come from overseas or had very close contact with people in their family who have had it," de Wit said.
As a precaution, screening is being offered to a small number of classmates and staff who have had regular contact with the student.
All school families have been sent a letter explaining the situation and information leaflets about TB are available at the school."
