" A total 15 people have died of cholera in Kawongo village, Kayunga District while 30 others have been admitted. Several residents have vacated the village. The District Medical Health Officer, Dr Edrisa Nkambi, last week attributed the outbreak of the epidemic to the prevailing poor sanitation in the entire village.
“There is only one latrine that is used by all village members which makes their lives difficult hence resorting to using bushes and surrounding water steams,” Dr Nkambi said. In a move aimed at improving sanitation in the village, the police central region spokesperson, Mr Lamec Kigozi, said people without pit latrines in their homes in the affected village will be arrested and prosecuted.
“This is to safeguard the village people from death,” Mr Kigozi said last week. The primary symptom of cholera is profuse diarrhea, severe dehydration and abdominal pain. Cholera may also cause vomiting."
