" Karwar: As many as 2,391 cases of fever, including 51 suspected chikungunya cases and 347 of dengue were reported in the district this year.According to source in the Health Department, dengue and chikungunya are wide spread in taluks where there are areca gardens.
The water sprinkling leads to water logging at certain points, giving scope for rapid growth of mosquitoes. Fogging is of little use to control the disease, they point out. The only way is to avoid water logging. The rains would have been the best solution since the mosquitoes die in rains. However, with the monsoon playing truant, the district has not been receiving adequate rains.
Ankola, Honnavar, Yellapur and Kumta taluks, A few dengue cases have been detected in Mundgod taluk also. The District Health Department has sent blood samples of 246 persons for laboratory tests to Bangalore and Shimoga of which 32 tested positive for dengue and 12 for chikungunya.
One case of swine flu was detected at Bhatkal, taking the total number to three in the district, One pregnant woman form Kumta and a three-year-old boy from Apsarakonda in Honnavar taluk died of H1N1, while another pregnant woman is being treated in Manipal KMC Hospital, sources said."
