" DAVAO CITY : While campaigning for a dengue-free environment in the region, the Region 11office here of the Department of Health (DoH 11) disclosed having the first case of death due to malaria this year.
Philip Duterte, a teacher at the Gumitan Elementary School in Marilog District, was the first reported death of malaria in the city.
After allegedly being misdiagnosed as having hepatitis A, Duterte was sent to the Southern Philippines Medical Center where he was diagnosed of malaria. However, due to complications, Duterte died of severe malaria on Tuesday.
Following the incident, Antonietta Ebol, coordinator of the Malaria Control Program of the DoH, said that a team was sent to investigate on the case.
“We immediately got blood samples of some residents there and out of the 333 samples, 14 percent or 45 people were positive of malaria,” she said.
Ebol said that they already requested for immediate assistance to the residents. “We will distribute mosquito nets and conduct spraying in households,” she said."
