Philippines : 37 die as dengue pummels Visayas

" MANILA: A total of 37 people, mostly infants and children, died as dengue, a rainy season disease transmitted by mosquitoes, wreaked havoc in the Visayas in Central Philippines, regional health officials reported on Sunday.Officials said Eastern Visayas led the rest of the country in the number of people who have fallen victim to dengue, totaling close to 4,000 with 37 deaths for the first six months of the year.

Tacloban City, the capital of Leyte province, has the most number of victims with more than 1,000, officials added.But violence-wracked Mindanao is not far behind, officials also said, with Davao del Sur province having the most number of victims, totalling 600 with 14 deaths.As a result, the provincial board declared a state of calamity due to the outbreak of the disease to enable officials to spend part of their calamity fund to help the victim and contain its spread."
