Article from Tenterfield Star, excerpt :
" HUNTER New England Health has confirmed a woman is in a stable condition in a hospital in the New England region with suspected meningococcal disease.
If confirmed, this will be the sixth case of the disease this year.
The woman’s close contacts have been contacted with appropriate advice.
Hunter New England Health said there were 13 cases of meningococcal disease in the region last year, 14 cases in 2009 and eight cases in 2008.
“The community needs to be on the alert, particularly as we move into the higher risk winter months, and if anyone suspects meningococcal disease, they should seek medical attention immediately,” public health physician Dr David Durrheim said.
The disease is fatal in about 10 per cent of cases, but early detection and treatment often results in a full recovery."
