" THE DENGUE MENACE HAS grown, killing dozens of mostly children nationwide and raising the alarm bells in many provinces where public health officials are now trying to cope with a constantly increasing number of victims.
In Southern Mindanao, health officials are scrambling for ways to prevent more fatalities following the deaths of 20 people, mostly children, in Davao City alone since January.
Salvador Estrera, Department of Health assistant regional director, said more than half of 2,100 cases in the region are in Davao.
“We are now considering (declaring) an outbreak,” said Estrera in a phone interview.
What makes the situation alarming, he said, was the continuing increase in the number of cases.
“There is an increase (in the number of cases) between 15-19 percent compared to the same period last year,” he said."
