Pontianak, West Kalimantan ::: Official doubts influenza virus is replicable in Pontianak

Via Ida at Bird Flu Information Corner :

" Pontianak – Influenza A virus like H5N1 and H1N1 subtypes assumed to have mutated to a replicable state in Pontianak, West Kalimantan, which has temperature about 30 centigrade, said Head of Health Service of Pontianak, Multi Juto Bhatarendo. Multi said any virus naturally could not survive at such temperature.

“Bird flu, swine flu or SARS viruses will emerge during rainy season on December to April, and usually occur in cold countries,” he said. Furthermore, he doubted if Pontianak, a city that passed by equator with adequate sunshine, could be a place for influenza virus replication. “It means there is gene mutation or high rate mobilization of the virus,” he added.
Multi also mentioned the development of virus replication is related to the vector and surrounding environment."
