Malaysia : Dengue cases in Selangor up 11%

" PETALING JAYA: Selangor saw 46,171 dengue cases last year, an 11% increase from the 41,486 reported in 2009.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Mohd Ismail Merican said, however, the final week of last year was encouraging, with 487 cases. This was 6% lower than the penultimate week when 519 cases were reported.

Ten states saw an increase in dengue cases last year, he said in a statement yesterday.
The states are Kelantan (2,547 cases), Johor (1,878) Sabah (921), Pahang (781), Malacca (716), Terengganu (504), Federal Territory/Putrajaya (459), Negri Sembilan (444), Kedah (32) and Perlis (24).

“Death involving dengue also increased to 134 cases in 2010 from 88 cases in 2009. Kelantan had the highest number of deaths in 2010 with 10 cases,” Dr Ismail said.

He urged the public to fight dengue by reducing Aedes mosquito breeding areas in their neighbourhoods and work places."
