Panama's dengue fever cases surpass 1,000 so far in 2011

Via Xinhua :

" A total of 1,008 dengue cases have been confirmed in Panama by Tuesday in 2011, including 6 deaths, Panama's Health Minister Franklin Vergara said, calling on all people to fight the disease.

Vergara said at a press conference that during the last 48 hours, hospitals had reported 100 new cases to the ministry, and he urged all citizens to remain vigilant and stay away from any sources that may spread the contagion.

Referring to the possibility of an epidemic developing in Panama, Vergara said some 20 people have been quarantined at hospitals after showing serious symptoms of dengue fever. However, he denied they were infected with the deadly hemorrhagic variety."
