Via Calgary Sun :
" The threat of contracting the so-called superbug has not deterred a number of Calgarian from travelling overseas for medical procedures.
Greg Benson, owner of Calgary-based SurgicalEscape, which coordinates surgeries at contracted foreign hospitals for Canadians and Americans, said his company has been keeping up to date with information about the New Delhi metallobeta- lactamase, or NDM-1 enzyme.
SurgicalEscape is keeping clients informed about the bug so they are well-aware of any risks before choosing to go abroad for medical procedures.
He said the Indian bug has been around for a number of years and with only about 200 cases diagnosed worldwide, contracting it is far from inevitable for tourists.
“It’s a little early to say what the risks of contracting the bug are,” he said.
If clients express concern about travelling to India, Benson said SurgicalEscape is linked with hospitals in plenty of alternative countries, including Panama, Costa Rica, Mexico, Barbados and Singapore.
“If people have concerns about India, we certainly have the ability to send them elsewhere,” he said."
