" SAN SALVADOR : The Salvadoran Health Ministry reported Thursday that three people died from hemorrhagic dengue in 2010, during which a total of 8,979 cases of the disease were detected, 20 percent more than the tally for 2009.The ministry’s director of Sanitary Monitoring, Julio Armero, told Efe that the number of deaths from hemorrhagic dengue fell dramatically percentagewise from last year, when 10 people died from complications linked to the disease.
“In 2010, we had 8,979 confirmed cases, against 7,480 in 2009, and 1,388 in 2008,” said Armero, who added that, of the total, “8,794 were classic dengue and 185 (were) hemorrhagic dengue ... and more than 20,000 suspected cases were reported.”
He added that in 2010 an epidemic was registered during “atypical period,” that is to say outside the rainy season that runs from May to September, and – in his judgment – dengue was one of the “diseases that hit (the Salvadoran public) hardest.”
Meanwhile, Armero said that last year 66 people, among whom were 34 minors, died from diarrhea, 12 percent fewer than the tally in 2009 from that cause, when 75 people lost their lives in that way."
