" MANILA, Jan. 6 : The World Health Organization (WHO) said Thursday it is the “winter influenza season” in Asia and all over the world due to the cold spells brought about by the Christmas season as well as Siberian winds.
WHO said in a report reaching the Department of Health (DoH) Central Office in Manila that there is a notable increase of influenza-like illness (ILI) in Asia and in parts of the Northern Hemisphere.
In Asia, ILI rates are increasing in the temperate countries. Mongolia has noted a sharp increase in the proportion of outpatients with ILI in sentinel clinics, which crossed the epidemic threshold two to three weeks ago.
China has noted slight increases recently in the northern part of the country, where 18 percent of specimens tested have been positive for influenza virus.
In both countries, influenza A(H3N2) virus has been the predominant virus detected with China also reporting smaller numbers of influenza type B.
The Republic of Korea and Japan have also noted low level but increasing rates of ILI."
