Via The Sydney Morning Herald :
" Animal welfare groups suspect that fear of the potentially deadly Hendra virus is behind a recent spate of cruel attacks on flying foxes.
Brisbane and Gold Coast wildlife rescue services say in recent months they have noticed an increase in killed or maimed bats.
Australian Bat Clinic director Trish Wimberley says that in one case a pregnant bat was either shot or stabbed and left to die slowly.
She said bats caught in fruit tree netting or barbed wire had been beaten to death or seriously injured.
One bat managed to crawl 20 metres with a broken jaw and wing but had to be put down."
