" VISAKHAPATNAM: The state recorded the first swine flu death this year when a businessman from Vizag fell prey to the deadly H1N1 virus here on Friday.
Thirty-year-old Appanna from Dondaparthy near Railway New Colony died around 5 pm in a private hospital where he was undergoing treatment since June 14. He was being treated in an isolation ward. When his condition deteriorated, he was put on ventilator on Friday morning. “He succumbed to the virus in the evening,” a doctor said.
Appanna had gone to his relatives’ place in East Godavari for a function last week where he developed swine flu symptoms. Various tests were done on Appanna and he was found swine flu-positive. Sources said the medical authorities have already administered the swine flu vaccine to members of his family.
Appanna was the first person in the city and the district to have been diagonised with the H1N1 virus since October last year. The first swine flu case in Vizag was reported on May 13 last year. Five persons, including a woman, had died of swine flu out of 29 positive cases in the district. It may be recalled 54 people had died of swine flu in the state last year.
Meanwhile, DM&HO K Swarajya Lakshmi has said intensive awareness campaigns would be taken up on swine flu."
